What is an Unsung Hero?

This award will be presented annually to a City of Albany employee who has made a positive impact on their community and the lives of others by volunteering their time and energy without seeking recognition for their good deeds.

Characteristics of an Unsung Hero include:

  • Humility: Unsung heroes are often humble and modest individuals. They do not seek attention or praise for their actions but are motivated by a sincere desire to help others or make a positive difference.
  • Selflessness: They put others' needs before their own, driven by duty and compassion instead of self-interest.
  • Consistency: Unsung heroes often show unwavering commitment to their cause and the people they assist. They consistently appear day after day, quietly making a long-term difference.
  • Courage: Numerous unsung heroes exhibit bravery when confronting challenges or adversity. This may involve standing up for others, speaking out against injustice, or persisting through difficult circumstances.
  • Empathy: They have a strong empathy for others, enabling them to understand and connect with people's needs and struggles.
  • Influence through actions: Unsung heroes primarily inspire others through their actions, not words. Their integrity and commitment serve as examples that encourage others to follow.
  • Impact: Despite their modesty, unsung heroes frequently have a significant impact on individuals, communities, and society. Their contributions may be small-scale, but they are collectively powerful.
