Municipal Court is a misdemeanor court that has jurisdiction over city ordinance violations and state traffic offenses. Specific type cases handled by the court include traffic offenses; driving under the influence of alcohol; possession and consumption by a minor; possession of marijuana less than an ounce; firearms violations; nuisance and abatement cases; and animal control citations.
Arraignments are held at the Dougherty County Jail Facility at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for citizens who are in the custody of the jail. Arraignments and bench trials are held at the Dougherty County Judicial building Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m. or as soon as arraignments at the jail are completed. The court also is responsible for entering case dispositions and forwarding entries to the Department of Driver Services.
The Office of the Municipal Court will no longer accept cash, including coins, as a form of payment under any circumstances effective Monday, March 9, 2020. Cash payments will continue to be accepted through the close of business on Friday, March 6, 2020. Acceptable forms of payment will include credit/debit cards, money orders, and cashier’s checks (no personal checks).
Mission
The Municipal Court's mission is to adjudicate cases fairly and to make every effort to provide the highest dependable customer service with professionalism, when dealing with departments within the City, elected officials, judges, attorneys and the general public.
Chief Municipal Court Judge
Ingrid P. Driskell graduated summa cum laude, from Albany State College in 1990 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She attended Emory University School of Law and graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1993. She is an active member of the Georgia Bar with twenty-three years of litigation experience and five years of judicial experience.
Ingrid P. Driskell served as an Assistant Public Defender in Fulton County (Atlanta) from 1993 to 1996. She moved back home to Albany in 1998 and began her legal career as a sole practitioner handling both civil and criminal cases in state and federal court. From 2002 until 2003, she served as appointed Solicitor for the Albany Municipal Court prosecuting misdemeanor criminal and traffic offenses and code enforcement violations committed within the city limits of Albany. She also served, by appointment, as Solicitor for the Lee County Probate Court from 2004 until 2006. In 2003, Ingrid P. Driskell was appointed as the Public Defender for the Albany Municipal Court where she represented indigent citizens charged with misdemeanor criminal and traffic offenses and code enforcement violations within the City of Albany. From 2014 until 2019, Ingrid P. Driskell also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Law representing the Dougherty County Division of Family and Children Services.
In November of 2019, Ingrid P. Driskell was sworn in as Associate Judge of the Dougherty County Juvenile Court. She served in that capacity until January 28, 2025. On January 29, 2025, Judge Driskell was appointed Chief Judge of Albany Municipal Court by the Mayor and Board of Commissioners.
Judge Driskell is a member of the Dougherty County Circuit Bar Association and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Dougherty Judicial Circuit Mediation Program. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Albany. Judge Driskell is the proud mother of Daysha and Daymon Polite and grandmother of Dakoda James Polite.
